Robert van Vorstenbosch has a background in Analytical Chemistry, obtained at the University of Amsterdam (UvA and VU), during which he did internships at TNO, Shell and DSM. As a chemist, he specialized in data-analysis and chemometrics.
He pursued his PhD at the University of Maastricht, where, using machine-learning methods in a clinical set-up, he investigated gut-health using Volatile Organic Compounds in fecal headspace and exhaled breath. Topics included colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and liver diseases (MAFLD and primary sclerosing cholangitis).
Recently he started working as a Post-Doc at Utrecht University, where he is involved in European projects including Endomix, EDC-MAFLD and EXPANSE. Here, he combines literature-based Large-Language-Models to direct metabolomics research questions. Other interests include novel data-analytical techniques to better comprehend complex systems. Overall his focus is on understanding the health effects of chronic (chemical) exposures.
Together with Roel Vermeulen and Jelle Vlaanderen, Robert leads the Computational and Database Core.
The unique and large-scale open facility Exposome-Scan gives researchers from all over the Netherlands the opportunity to study the exposome. Anyone who submits a good research request will have access to the research facility and will be able to conduct research at Exposome-Scan at cost price. The facility in Leiden opens on 15 February 2024 and builds on the knowledge gained in the Exposome-NL and X-omics research programmes.
